JOB DESCRIPTION

Do you want to contribute to a safer society? As a correctional officer at a prison, you are the foundation of the security work. You work in teams with other professionals to maintain a safe and secure environment and to motivate clients towards a life without crime. The daily work involves locking and unlocking residential rooms, searching premises, and supervision, as well as contact with clients and preparations for release, among other tasks. The role of a correctional officer involves a structured and routine-based approach with a focus on risk assessment and security awareness. The work is varied, and there are many development opportunities for those seeking continued employment. It is important that you share the fundamental values of the Swedish Prison and Probation Service regarding a humane view of humanity, respect for the individual, and the belief that people can develop and change.

An employment as a correctional officer at Kumla Prison means that you may be required to serve in all departments such as the normal department, psychiatric and care department, and monitoring center.

If necessary decisions are made, it may also be relevant to place you in a special department for clients under 18 years old. The focus will be on creating safe environments that promote reintegration into society with activities such as school, student health, employment, and age-appropriate leisure activities. Furthermore, the rights of the child during the enforcement must be ensured in accordance with the Convention on the Rights of the Child. Through client-centered work, we create a meaningful existence in an otherwise adult and security-oriented environment.

The probationary employment begins with three weeks of introduction at Kumla Prison. After a few months of service, we will schedule when you will start the mandatory basic training of the Swedish Prison and Probation Service. The training lasts for eight weeks and takes place during paid working hours. Assessments will be made continuously before the probationary employment transitions to permanent employment after six months.

QUALIFICATIONS

Your personal qualities are important to us. As a correctional officer, you need to be secure, stable, and have good self-awareness. Since you, together with your colleagues, drive the operations, you need to have good teamwork skills and the ability to communicate clearly. Good judgment and integrity are required in your professional practice. To thrive and succeed in your role, it is important that you share the fundamental values of the Swedish Prison and Probation Service regarding a humane view of humanity, respect for the individual, and the belief that people can develop. You must have a physical condition that allows you to act physically when the situation requires it.

We are looking for someone who has:

  • Work experience, including seasonal work, part-time employment, or self-employment. Internships and volunteer work are not considered equivalent to employment
  • Completed upper secondary education or other education combined with work experience that the Swedish Prison and Probation Service deems relevant
  • Good knowledge of the Swedish language in both speech and writing
  • Good computer skills

It is an advantage if you have:

  • Work experience from corrections, security work, social care, psychiatry, or health and social care
  • Knowledge in relevant areas such as behavioral science, criminology, psychiatry, law, and conflict management
  • Work experience with children and adolescents in social services, SiS, schools, or other activities that the Swedish Prison and Probation Service deems relevant.
  • Experience working with children and adolescents with neuropsychiatric disabilities (NPF).
  • Experience working with youth
  • Relevant language skills
  • Driver's license B

If you proceed to the interview process, there will be an information meeting and interview during the day at the regional office in Örebro on January 28 and February 5, 2026.
